Optimal Heating Solutions for Open Air Venues: Using Heliosa 44 Short-wave Infrared Heaters at Beach Road Winery

by | Oct 17, 2024 | Case study, Hospitality

Beach Road Winery is located just 45 minutes from Adelaide in the scenic McLaren Vale wine region. The venue is renowned for its stunning views that overlook sprawling vineyards and the hills of the southern Fleurieu Peninsula. The winery’s restaurant is a popular spot for local weddings and functions.

However, these picturesque qualities also come with difficulties in maintaining a comfortable dining atmosphere throughout the cooler months. The restaurant’s architectural design, which, while visually appealing with its openness to the surrounding landscape, makes it particularly vulnerable to wind and therefore heat loss. Traditional heating systems were not only inefficient but also struggled to provide consistent warmth across the covered yet open dining area.

Solution

The management decided to install Heliosa 44 short-wave infrared heaters, renowned for their efficiency and ability to deliver instant heat despite air movement. These heaters are designed to provide targeted warmth, ideal for the high ceilings and open spaces of the winery’s restaurant.

Installation Process

Seven Heliosa 44 short-wave infrared heaters were strategically ceiling-mounted to cover the entire dining area without disrupting the winery’s beautiful views. Additionally, two more Heliosa 44 heaters and a Heliosa 66 were wall-mounted in the garden dining room. Each heater was installed in optimal locations to ensure even heat distribution, focusing on areas where guests spend the most time. The sleek design of the heaters blended seamlessly with the white wooden beams and of the restaurant and avoided the need to dedicate valuable floor space to heating.

As an additional benefit, Beach Road Winery was able to use their solar panel installation to offset the cost of running heating, something not possible for portable gas heating.

Why use short-wave infrared for open air structures?

Compared to traditional infrared heating systems, such as quartz medium-wave, or long-wave panel infrared heaters, short-wave infrared is the optimal choice for restaurants and wineries with open-air structures. Even where blinds are used, short-wave infrared provides intense, immediate heat directly to objects and people, reaching operational temperature almost instantly, meaning no need to pre-heat an area.

Additionally, the radiant heat from short-wave infrared heaters can be directed towards specific areas or zones. This directional capability allows for targeted heating, ensuring that guests and operational zones stay warm without wasting energy on unused spaces. This feature, combined with the energy efficiency of short-wave infrared heaters, can result in significant cost savings.

When compared to gas heating, the infrastructure requirements when compared to fixed gas heating are significantly less and short-wave avoids loss of floor space associated with portable gas heating.

Conclusion

The installation of Heliosa 44 short-wave infrared heaters at Beach Road Winery has significantly  enhanced the dining experience, offering both immediate warmth and significant energy savings. This case study shows how the strategic use of advanced heating technology can overcome the challenges of maintaining comfort in open air venues. For venues facing similar challenges, adopting this innovative heating solution can ensure that guests remain comfortable, regardless of the season, while also optimizing operational costs.
